Homestar Espresso

The base of this espresso is a beautifully sweet dry-process coffee from the project of four woman growers—leaders in Brazils’ coffee trade—who export their own beans. Blending in a smooth gem from Peru adds some lingering milk chocolate and dried fruit. A crowd pleaser any way you choose to brew and particularly lovely as espresso.

We are aiming to always hit a core of nutty, fudgy sweetness, layering in subtle fruits and florals that’ll unfold into the finish. An expressive espresso that should unfold from first sniff to first sip into an enchanting aftertaste.

We consider ourselves to be on the lighter side of medium roasts — enough development for sweetness, body, and full flavor expression, but light enough to deliver all the nuances without introducing any of those strictly roasty characteristics.

Unlike our flagship blend The Mix which gets a new iteration each week (though the style and brew parameters are still very consistent), Homestar has longer iteration cycles for major changes to the blend and instead focuses on smaller tweaks and refinements with each new weekly batch. Our goal is to minimize the frustrations of dialing in new espresso and keep Homestar from becoming too much home-work!

There are no hard and fast rules as every espresso machine set up will have its own peculiarities. We like it in something close to a 1:3 ratio, but also enjoy more ristretto profiles, and find it works great in higher yield espresso too. Drop us an email letting us know what machine and grinder you’re using and we can suggest more specific starting points.

We’re believers in freshness, especially when it comes to espresso where the aromatic components are a big part of the enjoyment. You’ll find our coffees arrive very fast fresh, and depending on your preferences you may want to rest them a few days longer before diving into the bag. The best balance and performance is likely landing at around day 5-7 and tapers down as you get to around the two week mark. We suggest regular espresso drinkers look to get shipments at least every other week to stay in that sweet spot!

Yes! In fact, we think Homestar is a great choice for any brew method if you’re looking for a coffee that leans mild, rich, and very consistent with great flavor development. It makes a fantastic and versatile everyday coffee for drip, french press, or any brew method you want to throw at it.
